LAKE DUMBLEYUNG & SIGNIFICANT SITES
Visit gnamma holes (secret water holes), tribal corroboree grounds, ancient hunting grounds including Lake Dumbleyung, a place with a rich Aboriginal history. This body of water was once a significant source of food and water for the Wiilmen people of the region, attracting birdlife, wildlife, fish and yabbies. Now a saltwater lake due to land clearing, the lake is no less spectacular when full, attracting black swans and a multitude of birdlife. As you will discover on this tour, the spiritual and cultural connections that the region’s first people share with this place are still very much alive.

EMU DREAMING | EMU FARM TOUR
The ‘weitj’ (emu) was prized by the local Aboriginal people of the Dumbleyung area, Learn about the various hunting techniques traditionallly employed by the Wiilmen people to hunt this important source of food and how they were first to recognise the medicinal properties of emu oil. Visit an emu farm and see these majestic birds up close, learn about how emu oil is used today in pharmaceuticals & cosmetics and have to opportunity to purchase products direct from the farm.

DJILGI DREAMING | YABBIE FARM TOUR
Another important food source to the Wilmen people was the ‘Djilgi’ (yabbie). This freshwater crustacean was once abundant in Lake Dumbleyung and was traditionally cooked over open coals. Extensive land clearing and the resulting rise in the lake’s salinity has all but wiped out the local supply of the Djilgi from Lake Dumbleyung. A local enterprising farming family now farm the yabbie commercially. Visit the farm and see the operations, purchase local gourmet products and sample these freshwater delicacies.
